When choosing cabinets for your home or workplace today you are no longer limited only by the colour and design. With the advent of under cabinet strip lighting, a new dimension has been included that can add a touch of elegance to make them standout even more. LED strips are extremely versatile and can be used in many places within your space but the most popular use is probably on the underside of cabinets in kitchens, offices and also in commercial establishments such as restaurants and salons to add to the décor & ambience. Why use Cabinet Lighting? Whether you are refurbishing a home or office, or building a new one, installing under cabinet lighting makes perfect sense. Aesthetic Appearance Under cabinet strip lighting is available in stylish designs and makes the furniture even more aesthetically appealing. The addition of these lights can be the difference between a good looking room and a great looking room. Cost Efficient LED strips cost much less to run than traditional lighting options because they consume less power. They also last longer with an average lifespan of 30000 to 50000 hours per bulb eliminating the need to constantly purchase replacements. Functionality Under cabinet strip lighting adds a utility aspect and is quite functional. Traditionally, lights used to only be installed on ceilings - but with under cabinet strip lighting, the light source is closer to the task you are performing, giving you an optimally lit environment for efficient working, be it kitchen, office, salon or other. The need for additional lighting fixtures is eliminated, as this type of lighting fills both purposes. Choosing Cabinet Lighting While choosing cabinet lighting, a few factors must be considered. DC vs AC powered Under cabinet strip lighting can run either on a 240-volt AC mains supply or on a DC power source depending on the manufacturers specifications. An AC one can be plugged directly into a standard power plug but those running on DC will require a transformer. IP Rating These lights are available in different IP Ratings. The value of an IP Rating is the classification and rating of the degree of protection provided against intrusion from things such as objects like fingers and hands to much smaller things like dust & liquids and even accidental contact. The first number after the ‘IP’ is the level of ‘solid particle protection’, (scale is 0-6) eg: A rating beginning with IP01 would offer no protection against a solid object accessing hazardous parts. A rating beginning IP20 would indicate that fingers or similarly sized objects (>12.5 mm) should be protected by the enclosure from access to hazardous parts. A rating beginning IP60 would be completely dust tight offering a complete protection against contact. The second number after the ‘IP’ is the level of protection the enclosure provides against liquid getting in, (scale is 0-9) eg: A rating of IP20 would offer no protection against liquid & moisture. A rating of IP54 would offer protection against splashing water. A rating of IP65 would offer protection against water jets. And a rating of say IP68 would mean that it is suitable for continuous use under water.
